Lot 718 MOZAMBIQUE: AV GOLD 2 1/2 Maticaes (gold bar) (14.07g), 1851, Fr-6, KM-34, Portuguese Colonial issue, three rosette punches on obverse, quite rare and unusual. Not seen at a major auction in many years, Very Fine.

Mozambique was colonized by Portugal in 1505. From about 1500, Portuguese trading posts and forts became regular ports of call on the new route to the east. The denomination 2 ½ Maticaes, or 66 Cruzados, was a gold coin of bar form struck under Maria II of Portugal for Mozambique. There was also a corresponding 1 ¼ Maticaes which is scarcer. Over the last 7 years we found only 2 examples listed in major public auctions.
