AXUM: Ebana, ca. 450-500, AV GOLD tremissis (1.54g), Munro-Hay Type 71; BMC Aksum 304, crowned and draped bust right, holding branch and framed by grain ears /draped bust right, wearing headcloth, holding branch and framed by grain ears, minor weakness of strike, several tiny diebreaks, Extremely Fine.
Located in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea, Axum was deeply involved in the trade from India to the Mediterranean. It was previously thought to have been founded by Semitic-speaking Sabaeans who crossed the Red Sea from South Arabia (modern Yemen) on the basis of Conti Rossini's theories and prolific work on Ethiopian history, but many scholars now agree that it was an indigenous development..
