The Calydonian Boar is one of a genre of chthonic monsters in Greek mythology, each set in a specific locale, which must be overcome by heroes of the Olympian age. Sent by Artemis to ravage the region of Calydon in Aetolia, it met its end in the Calydonian Hunt, in which all the heroes of the new age pressed to take part, with the exception of Heracles. This incident in Greek mythology is paired with the Roman god Diana, the equivalent of the Greek god Artemis.

This is the scarcer variety without a scorpion below the quadriga, Crawford claims 20/22 dies for the non-scorpion variety compared to 336/373 dies for the scorpion variety.

This denarius was struck to commemorate the defeat by Pompey's general Marcus Scaurus of Aretas III, supporter of John Hyrcanus II in his battles against his brother, Aristobulus II. This is one of the earliest instances of a moneyer commemorating an event connected with his own history on his coins. When M. Aemilius, one of the most noted men of his time, was Governor of Syria, he repressed the incursions of the Nabathean Arabians, compelling their king, Aretas, to submit and pay a fine of 300 talents to Pompey. Pub. Plautius was curule aedile with him in 58 BC.

SEPVLLIVS / MACER, Venus standing left, holding Victory on extended right hand and resting on sceptre held in left, shield on ground to right. 18.8 mm; Die axis 9.5, Extremely Fine to Mint State.

This is one of the best portraits of Julius Caesar in existence. Excellent metal with attractive golden red iridescent toning around portrait. Razor sharp detail where the strike was made. The wreath on Caesar is fully struck which is very difficult to find.

This coin is part of a research paper to be published by John Vander Weit. The study relates to the preparation of silver flans in the Rome mint circa 46-43 BC. The author proposes that the flans during that period were prepared by pouring the molten silver into trays that had numerous small indentations engraved into them. Thus, one side of the flan would have numerous raised bumps on one side. If the coin was struck on center and evenly, they would disappear. However, Republican moneyers were notorious for their misses. When they missed a direct strike, the coin would still have the unstruck bumps showing. These bumps would wear off quickly because the unstruck silver was softer. Consequently, the only evidence we have of this flan preparation technique is from coins similar to this, where the strike is off center and the coin is not circulated. On this coin we can see evidence of the bumps on the reverse bottom.

Octavian, Caesar Augustus as he became known, had a fantastic admiral in Marcus Agrippa. Agrippa was also the architect responsible for the building of the first Roman Pantheon, which was destroyed in 80BC and then later rebuilt by Hadrian. Rebuilt using Agrippa's original plans, the Roman Pantheon survives today with a dome that spans 142 feet, the largest dome in the world until the 1400's.
We have not seen a better portrait, they are usually incomplete or softly struck. This was the first coinage to bear the name of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa.

Decent example with excellent centering and splendid eagle, 18.0 mm; Die axis 11.0, Extremely Fine.

Titus Aurelius Fulvus Boionius Arrius Antoninus Pius (September 19, 86–March 7, 161) was Roman emperor from 138 to 161. He was the fourth of the Five Good Emperors and a member of the Aurelii. He did not possess the sobriquet "Pius" until after his accession to the throne. Almost certainly, he earned the name "Pius" because he compelled the Senate to deify Hadrian.
His reign was comparatively peaceful; while there were several military disturbances throughout the Empire in his time, in one of them are considered serious. He was virtually unique among emperors in that he dealt with these crises without leaving Italy once during his reign, but instead dealt with provincial matters of war and peace through their governors or through imperial letters to the cities such as Ephesus (of which some were publicly displayed). This style of government was highly praised by his contemporaries and by later generations.
