Lot 616 JAPAN: Ansei, 1859-1868, AR ichibu-gin, Cr-16a, 15mm x 23mm, lot of 5 pieces., Brilliant Uncirculated.

The Japanese had been making a larger Tempo Ichibu-Gin until 1854. The Tempo coin had slightly more silver content than equivalent foreign coins (3 Tempo coins were used to match 1 foreign silver piece, which was basically the Mexican 8 Reales). The result was that precious metal was leaving Japan at a rapid rate. In 1859, out came a coin of less purity to stop the export of silver: The Ansei Ichibu-Gin (5 of which we have for sale in this lot). It had just slightly less silver than the 1 foreign silver piece and was made until 1868 for foreign trading.
