The Tempo coin had slightly more silver content than equivalent foreign coins (3 Tempo coins were used to match 1 foreign silver piece, which was basically the Mexican 8 Reales). The result was that precious metal was leaving Japan at a rapid rate. In 1859, out came a coin of less purity to stop the export of silver: The Ansei Ichibu-Gin (5 of which we have for sale in this lot).
