Lot 1558 AFGHANISTAN: brass medal (29.84g), ND, crossed flags of Britain & Afghanistan / Sir T. Salter Pyne, C.S.I. and Martin & Co., with G&B (supposedly for Greenwood & Batley, of Leeds) monogram in center, couple red corrosion spots, Extremely Fine, R, .

According to Bill Spengler this medal was intended as a sample of Martin & Co.'s work, given to Abdur Rahman in hopes of winning the contract for producing Afghanistan's coinage, which he believed they subsequently did. Pyne left Afghanistan in the summer of 1900; this piece would then likely have been struck circa 1890s.
